The Rottweiler is a very popular dog in America, but they originate from Germany. Both German and American are the same dog breed, so there are more similarities than differences. These dogs look very similar and can be hard to tell apart. But they are different in their purpose, personality, and the country of birth.

Both countries have their different organizations that govern breeding in the respective countries – the ADRK for Germany and the AKC for America. The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK) is the primary breed club in Germany and the American Kennel Club (AKC) is breed club in America.

These clubs established their universal physical and temperamental requirements. ADRK has very strict standards for breeding, the ADRK has a very strict no docking rule. They will not consider a dog an ADRK recognized Rottweiler if they have a docked tail however, AKC allows tail docking.

Rottweilers are loyal, loving, and powerful dogs. There are several standards for Rottweilers. In this article we will find out the differences between the German and the American Rottweiler and understand the dog breed from this mix.

The German Rottweiler

The German Rottweiler is considered one of the oldest dog breeds in existence. They are the original purebred. A Rottweiler is considered a German Rottweiler if it is born in Germany. So, if any of your Rottweiler was originally born in Germany, you can safely assume that your Rottweiler is defined as a German Rottweiler.

Apart from their place of birth, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler- Klub (ADRK) has other strict standards in place for the breed. For a dog to be considered a German Rottweiler, it needs to meet certain parameters set by ADRK. Regardless of whether the dog was born in Germany or not, if it adheres to these breed standards it can be classified as a German.

The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler- Klub ( ADRK) has a very strict no docking rule and does not register a Rottweiler with a docked tail. Tail docking is when an owner intentionally snips or cuts off a dog’s tail, which is generally done by snipping off the tail with surgical scissors, or by using a special band to cut off the blood flow, causing the tail to fall off.

The ADRK is also very strict regarding the reproduction of the German Rottweiler. Within Germany they only allow the mating of parents whose family tree has been carefully studied. Just to avoid variations in the characteristics of the breed.

The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler- Klub wants their Rottweiler to be compatible for use as companion dogs, guide dogs for the blind and or disabled, security dogs, working dogs, and family dogs.

It must be mild, calm, and with a sharp mind without getting into a violent mood and hurting others. That is why their guidelines are so strict where temperament is concerned. They just want the Rottweiler to be a perfect companion and working dog.

The American Rottweiler

The American Rottweiler is one born in America and has a characteristic docked tail. Tail docking for the American is common and was considered a breed standard by the American Kennel Club (AKC), though docking is no longer required. This breed is slightly smaller and less robust than the German Rotties.

The American Rottweiler is the second type. They descend from the German variety; Americans look like an elongated “classical” Rottweiler.

American Rotties are loyal, intelligent, and protective. They are also affectionate with children and highly trainable, which makes them great family dogs.
